AMERICAN FORK- Funeral services for George Frederick Shelley, 97, American Fork's oldest resident and long-time community leader, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the American Fork 3rd Ward chapel, 190 W. 3rd North. He died Monday in a local nursing home of causes incident to age.

Mr. Shelley graduated from Brigham Young Academy, forerunner of Brigham Young University, in 1890.
In 1894 he and his brother, John F. Shelley, founded the town of Shelley, Idaho. He later became manager of the Shelley Mercantile Co. In 1907 he returned to American Fork where he was employed at the Utah Banking Co.

CITY RECORDER
In American Fork he served as city recorder twice, as a member of the city council, first secretary of the irrigation company and was secretary of the American Fork Grazing Association for 40 years.

Shelley was elected to Utah State Legislature representing Utah County in 1922 and again in 1926.

He was author of the book, the "Early History of American Fork". The Shelley Elementary School in American Fork is named in his honor.

He served a Southern States Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a member of Alpine Stake High Council and the American Fork 3rd Ward bishopric.

BORN IN AUGUST
Born Aug. 1, 1871, in American Fork, he was a son of Thomas and Charlotte Elsmore Shelley. He married Lydia Gardner, Jan. 16, 1895, in the Salt Lake Temple. She died Oct. 4, 1897. On March 2, 1899, he married Mary A. Jacklin in the Salt Lake Temple.

Surviving are his widow, five daughters and a son, Mrs. A. DeMar (Mada) Dudley, Jensen, Uintah County; Mrs. Charles (Edna) Walker, and Mrs. Marvin (Fern) Allen, both of American Fork; Mrs. Thomas (Lucy) Reynolds, Provo; Mrs. Lawrence (Ethel) Wimmer, of Joseph city, Ariz.; and Carl T. Shelley of Holladay; 29 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at Anderson and Sons Mortuary Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday until 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in the American Fork Cemetery.
