ELSWORTH RILEY BONDS PETREE;

Elsworth R. Bonds Petree, son of James H. and Margaret Bonds Petree, was born Oct. 22, 1884, Franklin County Alabama. His great-grandfather, Henry Petree, was born in Germany and came from there around 1800 to settle in North Carolina. Elsworth Petree moved from Tennessee with his family to the Abilene, Texas area in 1897. In Apr. 1926 he moved his wife Annie, and their eight children to Martin County. He resided there until Dec. 1937 when he moved with his family to a cattle ranch near Capitan, New Mexico and died there Jan. 29, 1942. Mrs. Petree still resides in New Mexico. After reaching Martin Count by two Model- T Fords and two trucks, the Petree family settled immediately on a farm situated about five miles west of Stanton, purchased earlier by Mr. Petree from Mr. and Mrs. Milton Yater. Cattle ranching interested Mr. Petree though and after a few months, he resold the farm to the Yaters. He then purchased a ranch 8 miles northeast of Stanton, and the family moved there.
