Major League Baseball Player. The 5-foot-9 1/2, 150-pounder was a utility reserve infielder for much of his career. He played in one game for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1932 but didn't bat. He was signed by Cleveland on April 6, 1938 and played for the Indians from 1938 until traded to the Chicago White Sox on January 10, 1940 for infielders Ollie Bejma and Johnny Gerlach. He had hit .276 in 20 games in 1938 and .264 in 81 games in 1939. He hit just .199 in 118 games in 1945, but played in all seven games of the World Series against the Chicago Cubs. He was the leadoff batter in each game and hit .185 (5 for 27), scored four runs and drove in one as the Tigers won in seven. He batted .219 in 64 games in 1946 and .203 in 50 games in 1947. The Tigers released him on October 18, 1947, but the next month he was signed by the Philadelphia Athletics. He finished his career with the A's in 1948, hitting .148 in 23 games. The right-handed hitter wound up with a .219 average, 73 doubles, 15 triples, three homers and 166 RBIs. (bio by: Ron Coons)
