Death of Edmund S. Smith

Edmund S. Smith was born in Jackson County, Illinois [sic], on May 26, 1840, and died in his home in Oswego, Kansas, Saturday, January 4, 1918 [sic], at 9:12 p.m., aged 78 years, 7 months and 8 days.

Mr. Smith went to Iowa with his parents when a small boy and settled near Bloomfield. He enlisted in the Union army August 29, 1862 and served to the end of the war. He was in Co. G. 2nd Reg. Iowa veteran Inf. volunteers receiving his discharge on May 30, 1865.

On February 22, 1866, he was married to Jane Belle Doyle at Bloomfield, Iowa, she having passed away about 13 years ago. To this union six children were born, four girls and two boys, three of whom died in infancy.

Mr. Smith came to Kansas in September 1876 and moved into the home where he spent the remainder of his life. He ran a dray line in this city until ill health compelled him to retire. He had been confined to his home for some months. Last Monday he started up town but fell on the way, but was not hurt much. He was taken to his home and grew worse until his death. He was paralyzed for three days before his death.

He, with his wife united with the Methodist church in Iowa and in 1886 became members of the Christian church of Oswego, where he was a faithful member until his death. He was a member of the local G.A.R.

Those who are left to mourn his loss are, Otho Smith of Bristow, Ok., Mrs. Mary Parnell and Miss Belle Smith of Oswego, two grandsons, and a brother, Sam Smith, of Wichita, who was prevented from coming on account of illness, also a number of relatives and friends.

The funeral services were held at the residence Monday, January 6, at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. C.M. Thomas. The many beautiful flowers were a mute testimoy of the respect and esteem with which he was held by the people of Oswego.

Interment was made in the Oswego cemetery.

Those from out-of-town attending the funeral were, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Raymond and Mrs. J.J. Doyle and daughter of Altamont.
