Hon. Ansel J. McCall died at midnight Friday night. He had been ill for two weeks. His entire family – his wife, two daughters, Misses Sophie and Anna, and two sons, Elias and James – were with him at the end. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock.
Ansel J. McCall was born in Painted Post, January 14th, 1816, and was therefore 82 years of age. After a preparatory course at Franklin Academy, Prattsburg, he entered Hamilton college. He finished his college course at Union, however, from which he was graduated in the class of 1838. He commenced the study of law with Judge David McMaster, in this village, and finished in the office of Hammond & Campbell, being admitted to practice and entering into practice with Washington Barnes in 1842. The partnership continued for five years. Subsequently he practiced for several years with A. P. Ferris. He was appointed by Governor Bouck, in 1843, Surrogate of Steuben county, and held the office until the new constitution came into force Jan. 1, 1847. He was one of the original nine trustees of the New York State Soldiers' and Sailors' Home.
In 1849 Mr. McCall went to California with the god seekers, and many now living who remember with what vividness he pictured the scenes of those days in a series of letters published in The Steuben Courier and later preserved in pamphlet form. And to his ready pen and indefatigable research the generations now passing and those to follow are and will be indebted for much valuable history concerning not only Steuben county, but Western New York. He was probably the best informed man on local history this section has ever known.
