William Harrell is thought to be the son of the William Harrell who died in Evensham, Wythe County, Virginia, in 1822, and his wife Martha Mary (Wimberly ?).

At any rate, he married Elizabeth Hurst midyear in 1817 (not 1818--see Wythe County, Virginia, Marriage Register #1, p. 57). Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Mary McCarty Hurst. William and Elizabeth had 10 children: Elizabeth married Isaac Bartlett; Margaret married Abner Nunn; John James married 1st Lovey Caroline Fletcher and 2nd Melissa Boles; Montgomery married 1st Pertilla Brooks and 2nd Mary E. Reece; Andrew Wayne married 1st Mariariah Eliza Cunningham and 2d Malinda Bartlett; Robert G. married Mahala Hurst; Mariah Jane married Sterling Nunn; George W. married Nancy Ann Baker; Reuben Jerome married 1st Miss Lewis and 2nd Phoebe Ann Hurst; and Mary married Thomas Hall.

Between July 1833 and July 1835 William moved to Claiborne County, Tennessee. In the late 1850s, with the rumblings of the upcoming Civil War getting louder, he moved to Dallas County, Missouri, where he stayed until his death.

He and Elizabeth are buried outside of Bartlett Cemetery, south of Urbana, Missouri, under a tree.
