Riley Joe Spurlock, a former Addis chief of police and retired West Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's deputy died at 9 a.m. Friday, May 3, 1996 at his home in Addis. He was 79 and a native of Chatham, Louisiana. He served as police chief of Addis from 1984 to 1988. As a sheriff's deputy, his assignments ranged from duties as a jailer to radio dispatcher. In 1943, Spurlock was stationed by the U. S. Army as a guard at the U.S. Army's prisoner of war camp in Port Allen. He returned to West Baton Rouge Parish in 1954. He was a charter member of the Port Allen American Legion and charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Addis.
Visiting was held at Wilbert Funeral Home in Plaquemine, 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday and will be held after 11 a.m. Sunday. Religious services at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Sunday, conducted by the Rev. Harold R. Bryant and the Rev. Teryl Hebert. Interment in the Grace Memorial Park. Survived by his wife, Johnnie Mae Graves Spurlock, Addis; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Nelda and Lester Arnold and Freida and Delton "Mac" McLin, all of Central; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Vicki Moore Spurlock, Laurel Hill; a sister, Jeroline Kitchens, Albuquerque, N.M.; nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents, Katie Carroll and Thomas E. Spurlock, 10 brothers and 2 sisters.
