Dr. V. Dale Alquist, M. D., 97, of Baxter Springs passed from this life peacefully on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at home.

He was born on March 16, 1917 in Clay Center, Kansas. The son of Everett and Bess Alquist, and brother to Dr. Frank Alquist, D.D.S.

He graduated from Medical School at University of Kansas in 1942 in General Surgery. After residency and serving with the United States Navy during and after World War II from 1942-1947,where he met and married Katherine Ida Wilson, who was a Registered Nurse in the Navy. After the Navy, he finished his last residency in Wichita.

At the encouragement of Dr. Harvey Bogan, he moved to Baxter Springs, Kansas where he began his practice at Baxter Memorial Hospital, St. John's Hospital, where he was Chief of Surgery for a time, and Freeman Hospital. In the mid 70s, he closed his office in Joplin and started doing surgery at Baxter Memorial Hospital until his retirement in 1985.

His greatest enjoyments were golf, farming while raising cattle and horses and playing cards with his friends, which he consistently did for the past 50 years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife,Katherine W. Alquist, R. N., and his brother, Dr. Frank L. Alquist, D.D.S.,

He is survived by his four children, Stephen Alquist, Douglas Alquist, Laurie Alquist and Bruce Alquist, four grandchildren; Aaron Alquist and his wife, Lauren, Michael Elledge, Kevin Alquist and Ethan Alquist, one step-granddaughter, Laura Bethany Beck and her husband, Alan, two great-grandchildren and two great step grandchildren.

A Memorial Visitation was held at Derfelt Funeral Home in Baxter Springs, Kansas on Sunday, July 13, 2014.

Contributions can be made at Derfelt Funeral Home to The Wounded Warriors Project.

A private burial at Baxter Cemetery will be performed at a later date.

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Dr. V. Dale Alquist, M.D. 97, of Baxter Springs, Kan., passed from this life peacefully on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at home.

Dale was a general surgeon and practiced at Baxter Memorial Hospital, Joplin at St. John and Freeman hospitals for many years. After closing down his office in Joplin in 1975, he concentrated his practice solely at Baxter Memorial Hospital until 1987.

His family is having a Memorial Visitation at Derfelt Funeral Home in Baxter Springs on Sunday, July 13, between 2 to 4 p.m.
