Willis was born in Green Co. KY and died in Lancaster South Carolina, (killed in action, Civil War). He enlisted in Company G, Kentucky, 3rd Cavalry Reg. Oct 3, 1861 and fought for the Union. His rank was Corporal. He mustered out on Dec. 26, 1864 in Nashville, TN. The Union troops encamped around the Olde Presbyterian Church in Feb. 27th, 1865. The Liter family history tells that he was killed in S. Carolina just a few days before the war was over.

He married Sarah Ann Campbell on Feb. 13, 1843, Jefferson Co. Kentucky.

He married Emily Catherine Liter Peden Boggs, a widow with two children on Sept. 20, 1848. To this union these children were born, John Henry. b. 1849, William Thomas b. 1853, Minnie Jane b. 1851, Cassius Clay b. 1861. All were born in Indiana.

Emily's children from her two previous marriages also lived with them, Ona J. Peden and Bell Anne Boggs.
