Jeff was a highly accomplished Linguist. His Ph.D. thesis work at M.I.T. gave rise to the study of thematic relations in generative grammar, and he published papers in this area throughout his career. His work on the Hoa language of Botswana was one of the first systematic descriptions of a Khoisan language. He lived in Botswana and Nigeria for more than 20 years, where he conducted linguistic field work and taught linguistics. Jeff embraced the Baha'i Faith while a graduate student, and contributed greatly to the development of the Baha'i Faith in Botswana and Nigeria, including assisting native speakers with translation of Baha'i writings into Setswana. Jeff was also an accomplished artist whose paintings reflect on humanity's relationship to the divine. Jeff was predeceased by his parents and his brother Craig. He is survived by scores of loving cousins and friends.
