Thank You for visiting our beloved cousin Arlie. We appreciate each of your caring visits very much. God bless.

Arlie Elder was born on March 15, 1876 in Clark County, Ohio, USA, and was the son of Samuel S. and Mary W. Powell Elder. Arlie was the younger of the twins born to Samuel and Mary. His older twin brother's name was Samuel S. Elder, named after his father. This is proven correct by Arlie's military records, and son Samuel's birth record. By 1879 Arlie's father Samuel passed away due to consumption, attending physician was listed as Van Norman (or Norman Van) of Springfield, Clark County, Ohio, USA. By the US Federal Census of 1880 Arlie was mentioned along with his mother Mary and a paternal uncle David W. His twin brother Samuel is no longer mentioned as part of the household, and likely passed away, but no death records are found at this time. Mary rented 30 acres for the cost of part of the money made from her goods produced. I'm sure David was a great help. I still have not located where Mary went after 1880. Her sister Elizabeth Powell passed away in 1880 from consumption. David later married, and Arlie turned up to be living out west by the time WW1 began. His mother Mary may have married again, but I have not been able to find further records for her, and her burial place is unknown at this time.

In 1894 records show Arlie owned 85 1/3 acres in Green, Pitchin, Clark County, Ohio, USA. Pitchin is located within Green Township and is a minor civil division (MCD) of Clark County in Ohio. Arlie is next seen to be enlisted in the military as a private in the Spanish American War on June 13, 1898 and was discharged on January 20, 1899 after serving in the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company B, Spanish American Division. By WWI his draft card stated he was now living in Maricopa County, Arizona, and served from 1917-1918. He was listed as medium build, light brown/gray hair, gray eyes. Listed contact relative for Arlie was a W. N. Elder of Ohio, and he worked as a farm laborer for a Mrs. Evans. Arlie filed for a Civil War pension on February 1, 1927 and is now found to be living in California.

Arlie's mother Mary was the daughter of John Briggs and Caroline Hon Powell. Caroline was the daughter of George and Mary Whitehouse Hon. George and his parents went through the Ruddle's Massacre in Kentucky in 1880 when George was only 5 years old, and seems he was the only known surviving prisoner of his family taken by the Shawnee, at least by the time the white prisoners were finally secured freedom by an acceptable ransom paid to the Shawnee. By then George was in his teens, and it is believed he didn't remember his parents, or did not care to talk about them due to the disturbing memories of the massacres. George and Mary married and settled in Marietta, Ohio in the early 1800s when the territory was just opening up for settlement. George died young, and Mary followed him in death soon after. Caroline and her siblings were then awarded in custody by the courts to Mr. Douglas according to their father's wishes. John Briggs Powell's parents were William Powell and Elizabeth Briggs Powell. The parents of Elizabeth were John Marion Briggs, an Overmountain Man of the American Revolution, and Catherine Peterson Briggs.

There are no records currently found showing that Arlie ever married. All records I've found so far are for men with the same first and last name who were born in other states, or lived in other states with their census records or other record dates and information conflicting with our Arlie's records. I hope he did marry, and perhaps someone will find these records and share the information. There are no known children listed for Arlie at this time as well.

Arlie passed away January 4, 1939 in Red Bluff, Tehama County, California, USA where he currently rests.

May our beloved Arlie rest peacefully in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We have always loved you dearly, Arlie, and you will always be remembered.

Arlie Elder was the son of Samuel and Mary W. (Powell) Elder. He was the twin brother of Samuel Elder, both born on March 15, 1776 (according to records). One military record lists Arlie born about 1877.

Arlie was also drafted to serve in World War I. At the time, he was a resident of Maricopa County, Arizona from 1917-1918. He was listed as medium build, light brown/gray hair, gray eyes. Listed contact relative was a W. N. Elder of Ohio. Arlie's military records show his birth date to be the same as his brother Samuel (March 15, 1776), proving them to be twins.

By the 1880 US Federal Census of Clark County, Ohio, only Arlie is listed (age 4). Little Samuel likely passed between birth and 1880. Father Samuel passed in 1879 from consumption.
