WILLIAMSPORT - Elsie Mabel Horst, 88, of Williamsport, died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, at Homewood Retirement Center.

Born May 31, 1910, she was the daughter of the late David L. and Alice Deatrich Horst.

She was a 1926 graduate of Washington County High School. She received her teaching certificate at Towson Normal School in 1928, and a bachelor's degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1939. She received a master's degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. She took courses in Guidance and Counseling.

She taught in Washington County Schools for 27 years and was a school counselor for 12 years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church where she taught intermediates and adults, was trustee and a member of Stewardship Committee and the Personnel Committee. She organized the Over 60 Club that planned activities for retirees and formed a travel club.

She was a member of AAUW; Womens Club; AARP; Commission on Aging; and Hospital Auxiliary. She worked in education groups where she served as president of local Teachers' Association; School Counselors and Retired Teachers. She was elected state president of Classroom Teachers and Maryland Retired Teachers.

She is survived by two sisters, Florence Wheeler of Silver Spring, Md., and Mary Weller of Hagerstown; nieces; nephews; great-nieces; great-nephews; great-great-nieces; great-great-nephews; and a great-great-great-nephew.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church at Washington Square. The Revs. Eddie Blackman and Wendell Gross will officiate.

Visitation will be Saturday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.
