Florence Horst Wheeler, 91, a 1930 graduate of Hagerstown High School, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington where she had lived for several years.
Mrs. Wheeler, a native of Hagerstown, moved to Washington, D.C., to attend the Garfield Hospital School of Nursing (now part of the Washington Hospital Center), from which she graduated in 1934. She married Edmund Goodrich Wheeler in 1937. They resided in Washington, D.C., Silver Spring and Bethesda, Md., and Deerfield Beach, Fla. (where Ed died in 1988). Florence returned to the Washington area in 1998.
The Wheelers raised their children in Bethesda, where Florence was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Norwood Parish, a nurse at Suburban Hospital and the Bethesda Navy Medical Center, and a volunteer at her children's schools.
Florence is survived by her children, Dorothy Wheeler Doyle of Jefferson, Md., Charles Wheeler of Olney, Md., and Weldon H. Wheeler of Frederick, Md.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Weller of Hagerstown, Md.
A memorial service for family and relatives will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 5609 Ballenger Creek Pike, Frederick, MD 21703.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church or the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington, 6121 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD 20847.
