PERRY Shirley Blount 92, of Wellesley passed on peacefully September 14, 2012 in her home after a brief illness, surrounded by her family.

Born July 10, 1920 at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY to the late GEN Matthew Bunker Ridgway and Julia Caroline Blount, Shirley loved to travel.

She lived in GA, China, CA, and Newton before settling in Wellesley for the past 55 years with her husband of 66 years, Kenneth Eugene Perry, who survives her.

A graduate of the Katherine Gibbs School, Shirley worked at MIT in the chemical engineering department during WW II, marrying Kenneth in 1946.

Her love of opera led her to serve as an overseer of The New England Conservatory and on the boards of the Boston Concert Opera, Opera Boston Theater, Boston Lyric Opera, and her crowning achievement: president of Sarah Caldwell's Guild of the Opera Company of Boston.

Shirley's civic memberships included the Women's Republican Club of Wellesley, The House and Garden Club of Wellesley where she served as a president, the Wellesley College Club, and 54 years in the Wellesley Country Club.

She was an active member in the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Wellesley and she served as the Director of Winbro Group, LTD.

Shirley was vivacious and full of life to the end; as the family Matriarch, her warmth, generosity, grace, and love sustained us all.

Besides her husband, Shirley is survived by her sons, Dr. Winfield B. Perry and his wife Linda, Nelson I. Perry and his wife Elizabeth, and her 3 grandchildren: James, Julia, and Luke and their spouses.

Funeral arrangements are private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boston Lyric Opera at 11 Avenue de Lafayette, Boston, MA 02111.
