On 30 July 1813, in Madison County, Kentucky, Rebeccah's father - Robert Harris, entered into a marriage bond with Samuel H[arris] Haden, whereby Samuel confirmed his intention to marry Robert's daughter, Rebeccah Harris. In keeping with traditional naming patterns, Rebeccah and Samuel named their 1st daughter - Nancy Haden, after Rebeccah's mother - Nancy (Grubbs) Harris. They named their 1st son - William Haden, after Samuel's father - William Haden. Their 2nd daughter was Catherine Lucy Haden, named after Rebecca's sisters - Catherine (Harris) Stone and Lucy (Harris) Jones, since they had already named their first daughter Nancy, which was also Samuel's mother's name. Rebeccah and Samuel named their 2nd son - Robert Harris Haden, in honor of Rebeccah's father - Robert Harris. Rebeccah was not remembered in her father's will, and hence, was overlooked as a child of Robert and Nancy (Grubbs) Harris in the book, History and Genealogies of the Families of Miller, Woods, Harris . . . and Many Others; by William Harris Miller (1907).

A grand daughter of Rebeccah's, Frances Rebecca (Haden) Foard, documented in the Foard Family Record, the birth/death dates of her parents as Robert Harris Haden and Jane Elizabeth Curtis. She also documented the names of her paternal grand parents as Samuel and Rebeccah Haden. The FFR was a typed manuscript found by descendant Ruth Wilson in a roll of papers behind the desk of Frances Rebecca (Haden) Foard after she died. The documentation implies there was likely a Bible record at one time. The FFR only cites the birth year of Samuel and Rebeccah, as well as the birth years of their son Robert Harris Haden; his wife Jane Elizabeth Curtis and their children. Other Haden & Foard descendants later added more detailed death/birth dates to the original. See Family Search Ancestral /Pedigree Resource file, 'Henry Wyatt Foard', printed Oct 1956, Lewiston, Idaho, archived at the Lewiston, Idaho, Public Library.

Frances Rebecca (Haden) Foard had the same first name of her paternal STEP-grand mother (Samuel's 2ND wife) whom she obviously knew well, for at least 30 years. The FFR author's middle name, "Rebecca", was given as a remembrance to her BLOOD paternal grand mother, Rebeccah (Harris) Haden (Samuel's 1ST wife), whom she obviously did not know, since Grandma Rebeccah died about 20 years before the birth of Frances Rebecca.

Adding further credence to Rebeccah's parentage and their Harris - Haden relations, her brother Tyre's & his wife Sally's 5th child/3rd son, was named William HADEN Harris, who was born shortly before Rebeccah & Samuel H[arris] Haden married. Additionally, Rebeccah and Samuel named their 4th child/3rd son, Tyree, after Rebeccah's brother.

The relationship of Rebeccah's cousin - Anna (Harris) Dabney - Haden and Anna's 2nd husband - Anthony Haden - an uncle of Rebeccah's husband, was the connection likely responsible for Rebeccah and Samuel meeting. During the War of 1812, Samuel was compelled enough to remove from Logan County, to the Lexington - Boonesborough area where he was born and had lived until he was about six years old. Samuel was listed as a witness on deeds in Logan County in 1811, but not in 1812 or 1813. Kentucky enlisted 20,000 plus men during the war and suffered more casualties than all other states combined. However, there is no official record of Samuel serving. His uncle, Anthony Haden, with his 3rd wife Anna Harris and their three sons, having moved from Wilkes County, North Carolina in 1812, were living for a time in the Bourbon - Fayette - Madison County area, where their three sons had married, during the 1812 - 1817 period. In the 1820 census, Anthony's & Anna's son Nathan was living in Hopkinsville, Christian Co., with his own family, and Anthony and Anna (listed as age 45 plus), where son Joel and his family were also living. Christian Co. is next to Logan Co., where Samuel had moved back to with his wife Rebeccah, after marrying in Madison County.

Rebeccah and Samuel married around the same time period and geographic area as did Anthony & Anna Haden's 3 children, who were 1st cousins of Samuel's.
1) Joel Harris Haden: married 9 Jul 1812, in Bourbon Co KY to,
+ Patsy M[artha Ann] Smith, d/o Charles Smith & Elizabeth Mosby.
2) Nathan Overton Haden: married 25 Apr 1813 / Bourbon Co KY to,
+ Margaret C. Smith
3) William Dabney Haden: married 9 Apr 1817 / Fayette Co KY to,
+ Elizabeth Lewis Jouett, daughter of Revolutionary War hero Capt Jack Jouett, son of Mourning (Harris) Jouett, daughter of Robert Overton Harris and Mourning Glenn.

Rebeccah's husband Samuel, had two more 1st cousins through his Uncle Anthony, and his first wife Drusilla Rountree, that at one time had lived in Madison Co. or Fayette Co., Kentucky, and/or Campbell Co., Virginia, by Samuel and their father William Haden:
4) John Haden, who married Rachel Reynolds, came from Campbell County, Virginia, where his father Anthony had lived. John then lived in Madison County, Kentucky, from at least 1810, until 1820, and by 1830, had moved to Missouri. Two sons, John M. Haden and Benjamin J. Haden, remained in Madison County, Kentucky.
5) Jane "Jenny" Haden - wife of Charles Gilbert, had moved to Fayette County on the South Branch of the Elkhorn by 1790, when Samuel's father William was there. In 1788, the Gilberts had sold their home on Seneca Creek in Campbell County, Virginia, where they had lived in close proximity to Jenny's father - Anthony Haden and his 3rd wife - Anna (Harris) Dabney - Haden. After living in Fayette County, the Gilberts moved west to Logan County, Kentucky, like Samuel's father - William Haden moved his family.

In total, five children of Anthony Haden (1st cousins of Samuel Harris Haden) had also lived at one time close to where Samuel and/or his father William had lived; in/by Fayette, Madison, and/or Logan County, Kentucky.

Circa 1781 - 1790, many children and grandchildren of Robert Overton Harris and Mourning (Glenn) Harris, were of those migrating to Madison / Fayette Cos. Kentucky, from Albemarle / Louisa Cos., Virginia. Most of them were known to William Haden (Samuel's father), who moved ca. 1784-88, from Fluvanna/Campbell Cos. VA, to Fayette Co., KY, and whose ancestors had known this Harris family's previous generations in Virginia. A number of descendants of Anthony Haden the elder, as well as the descendants of Robert Overton Harris, had married into some of the same families; of noteworthy mention, the Dabney & Jouett families.

In 1787, in Albemarle Co, Virginia, a marriage bond was signed between Jack Jouett's father, John Jouett SR - the bondsman, and Anthony Haden - the groom, intending to marry Anna (Harris) Dabney - sister of Mourning (Harris) Jouett - wife of John Jouett SR. So Anthony Haden married one of Jack Jouett's aunts. Jack had also once guaranteed payment to Thomas Jefferson, on Anthony's behalf, where Jefferson performed legal work for Anthony regarding a real estate dispute/case that Anthony lost, then refused to pay Jefferson for his services. See Founders Online Archive, Thomas Jefferson Memo. Books. Rebeccah (Harris) Haden was a 2nd cousin, 1X removed, of Jack Jouett, sharing the common ancestors of Robert Overton Harris & Mourning Glenn.

Rebeccah's father - Robert Harris was a 2nd cousin of Anna (Harris) Dabney - Haden, who was Anthony Haden's 3rd wife, with Anna's and Robert's common great grandparents being William Harris & Temperance Overton.

The first husband of Anna (Harris) Dabney - Haden was William Dabney, who died in 1779. Said William Dabney was also a brother of Mary (Dabney) Harris, who was the wife of Christopher Harris SR. - the paternal grandfather of Samuel Haden's two wives - Rebeccah (Harris) Haden & Frances (Harris) Black - Haden, meaning, Samuel Haden's two wives were related to each other as 1st cousins. The 2nd wife of Samuel H. Haden was Frances "Fannie" (Harris) Black - Haden, a daughter of Christopher Harris JR., as proven by "History & Genealogies of the Families of Miller, Woods, Harris . . . " p. 297.

A son of Rebeccah Harris & Samuel H. Haden SR. was Samuel Harris Haden JR, who married Margaret L. Blewett, daughter of Thomas Hill Blewitt & Susanna A. Harris. Susanna was also a daughter of Christopher Harris JR & Elizabeth Grubbs. Elizabeth being a sister of Nancy Grubbs, who was married to Robert Harris, Rebeccah's parents.

The mother of Samuel Harris Haden was Ann "Nancy" (Johnson) Haden, whose parents were Joseph Johnson & Sarah Harris (born about 1715 - 1740) whose relationship is unknown, but she was likely related to the William Harris & Temperance Overton line, considering later generation marriages occurring between Harris and Haden families.

The Boone family: genealogical history of descendants of George and Mary Boone, who came to America in 1717, page 132; "on 2 Feb 1810, William Linville Boone - [son of George Boone - younger brother of Daniel Boone] and William Linville Boone's wife - Nancy (Grubbs) Boone, conveyed to Richard Tunstall Jr., land on Tates Creek in Madison County, Kentucky, adjoining [John, aka James] Berry and others.
Witnesses to this deed were REBECCAH HARRIS, and their two daughters - Lucy Boone and Mrs. Milly (Boone) Carson - wife of William Carson [half brother of Kit Carson]. The land of Lindsey Carson, father of the William Carson above, adjoined William Boone's land. James Berry was an uncle of Nancy (Grubbs) Boone."

John "James" Berry noted in land transaction above, married Elizabeth "Betsey" Harris - daughter of Robert Harris & Nancy Grubbs, so Betsey (Harris) Berry was a sister of Rebeccah, whose parent's family homestead was located on Tates Creek, very close to the homestead of William and Nancy (Grubbs) Boone on the Lexington Road, about three miles northwest of Richmond, Kentucky, where the Boone/Harris Cemetery was located, where a bank now exists.

Page 131 of the same book says, "in 1789, he [William Linville Boone] was married to Nancy Grubbs, the rites performed by Reverend Christopher Harris [likely SR], of Old Baptist Faith", who married Mary (Dabney) Harris, daughter of Cornelius Dabney II/Jr. & Sarah Ann Jennings. According to church records, Christopher the Junior began officiating marriage rites in 1792.

Nancy (Grubbs) Boone, was a daughter of Higgason Grubbs & Lucy (Harris) Grubbs.
Higgason Grubbs was the brother of Nancy (Grubbs) Harris, who was the mother of Rebeccah (Harris) Haden. Therefore, Nancy (Grubbs) Boone was a 1st cousin of Rebeccah (Harris) Haden.

Lucy (Harris) Grubbs was an aunt of Rebeccah, through her uncle Higgason Grubbs. Lucy (Harris) Grubbs was the daughter of James Harris JR & Mary (Harris) Harris, so Lucy was a 2nd cousin of Rebeccah's father Robert Harris. Nancy (Grubbs) Boone would have been a niece of Anthony Haden's 3rd wife - Anna (Harris) Dabney - Haden.

Mary (Harris) Harris was a sister of Anna (Harris) Dabney - Haden - the 3rd wife of Anthony Haden. Anna (Harris) Dabney - Haden & Mary (Harris) Harris were daughters of Robert Overton Harris & Mourning Glenn. Additionally, Higgason Grubbs was a brother of Nancy Grubbs & Elizabeth Grubbs; who respectively married Robert Harris & Christopher Harris JR, them being the respective fathers of Samuel Haden's wives, Rebeccah (Harris) Haden & Frances (Harris) Black - Haden.

Two uncles of Anthony Haden the younger - William Haden & Joseph Haden, had moved from Virginia to North Carolina on the "Forks of the Yadkin River" in 1767/77, where they had lived in close proximity to George Boone (younger brother of Daniel) was born and where most of the other Boone Clan had lived, prior to moving to Kentucky. Haden and Boone family members living at the Fork Of the Yadkin, were baptized members of the same church. See William Haden's memorial, "1774 Mar 20: Dutchman's Creek Church Minutes". This meaning, members of the Haden clan were acquainted with members of the Boone clan, before members of their families had relocated to Kentucky.

The census of Madison County, Kentucky, in 1810, lists two men's households as 'ROBERT HARRIS' and both are over 45 - born before 1765. One has a presumed wife born before 1765 listed, but no children in the household and has a margin note, "grey hair". The other ROBERT HARRIS has a margin note included as "Tate's Crk", and the enumeration lists their 3-generation household. The "grey hair" Robert Harris can NOT be the Robert Harris who married Jael Ellison in 1812, who was the son of John Harris & Margaret 'Peggy' Maupin.

Rebeccah's brother Tyree and his wife Sally were not listed in the 1810 census in their own household, but had married in 1803, so it's likely they were the ones listed in the above census. In this census, the note in the margin, "Tates Crk", is highly indicative this Robert Harris was related to the Christopher Overton Harris SR (Robert's father) and Christopher Harris JR (Robert's brother) became Elders in the Tate's Creek Baptist Church in 1788 and 1792, that were "authorized to celebrate the Rites of marriage". In 1816, Christopher JR. moved to Warren/Logan/Simpson Co KY, close to the family of where his daughter, Frances "Fannie" (Harris) Black Haden would move.

When Rebeccah was born, her mother Nancy (Grubbs) Harris was 42 yrs - 3 ms old. Rebeccah had her last child, Joshua, when she was 42 yrs - 10 ms old, then died 57 days later. Rebeccah presumably died of complications from child birth.

After Rebeccah died, Samuel remarried by Jan 1836, to Frances "Fannie" (Harris) Black - d/o Reverend Christopher Harris JR & Elizabeth Grubbs - sister of Nancy Grubbs who married Robert Harris - brother of Rev. Christopher Harris JR - who moved ca. 1816, to western Kentucky in the Warren/Logan/Simpson Co area, very close to where Samuel and his father William lived. Fannie's 1ST husband was Joseph Black (d. 26 Jun 1820). Fannie being Samuel's 1st wife's 1st cousin, who would also be a grandaughter of Christopher Overton Harris SR, like Rebeccah. Fannie was likely living in Simpson County, Kentucky as early as 1816-20, with her 1st husband - Joseph Black.

I have been reading your work on the web. Joshua and Nancy Haden Spencer are my G G G grandparents. When visiting the Wand Cemetery in Warren County Kentucky, I found a stone for Nancy H. (or E.) Spencer, wife of J. H. Spencer. Born Sept. 27, 1817 and died April 11, 1904. This cemetery is not far from a cemetery where her son, David Spencer and his wife are buried. Both cemeteries, especially the Wand Cemetery are in very bad shape (very few stones left). I thought I had a picture of the stone, but was mistaken. I will get there this spring and make one. I do not have a death-date for Joshua. Do you? Just thought you might like to know this, in case you did not have this information. Alice Crews

Gratitude and credit to Kay Haden for her insightful compilation, Leaves of the Tree, where she has documented in expanded detail upon Dorothy Kabler Haden's work - John Haden of Virginia (1968). In addition to sources cited within, much of this biography incorporates Kay's thorough analysis of facts and tradition, which has been helpful in locating the home location and resting place of Rebeccah (Harris) Haden.

1810 Census of Madison Co KY: Robert Harris household - "Tates Creek" (likely persons):
