Samuel's father, William Haden SR., moved from Fluvanna Co., Virginia, to Fayette Co., Kentucky by the South Elkhorn, just southwest of Lexington, between 1784 & 1788, corroborating Samuel's date & place of birth as 1789-1790, in Kentucky, as the 1850 & 1860 censuses indicate. After living in Fayette Co. until about 1797, Samuel's parents removed the family to the southwest, to Logan Co., Kentucky, as his father shows on the 1797 Logan Co. tax schedule there then. Along with Samuel's family, others who lived by them in Fayette/Madison Cos.; like the families of Morton, Grubbs, Gilberts and Christopher Harris Jr., joined Samuel and Rebeccah in Logan County, within several years after their marriage. Samuel's middle name HARRIS, is after his maternal grandmother - Sarah Harris (died after 1782 / Goochland Co, VA) who married Joseph Johns(t)on.

About 1812, when Samuel was 22 years old, he was compelled enough to remove from Logan County, back to the Lexington - Boonesborough area, where he had lived with his family until they moved west when he was 6 or 7 yrs old. Samuel may have been lured back with the threat of War, as Kentucky is said to have enlisted 20,000 plus men and saw more casualties than all other states combined. Samuel's uncle Anthony Haden, with his 3rd wife Anna Harris and their three sons, having moved from Wilkes County, North Carolina, in 1812, were living for a time in the Bourbon - Fayette - Madison County area, where their three sons married from 1813 to 1817. By 1820, Anthony, Anna, Joel and Nathan had moved west, onto Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky, less than a days ride to Logan County, where they lived close by to Samuel and Rebeccah, until Anthony's & Anna's deaths.

SAMUEL'S FIRST MARRIAGE TO REBECCAH HARRIS, b. 1792, d. 1835:
By 30 Jul 1813, Samuel had returned to Madison County. Then shortly after the mentioned date, he married Rebeccah Harris - d/o Robert Harris (attached marriage bond) and Nancy Grubbs. There were 2 men born before 1765, named Robert Harris, living as heads of their households in the 1810 Madison County census. One Robert Harris has his wife and NO children in his household and a margin note indicates "grey hair". The other Robert Harris is listed with a margin note that says, "Tates Creek". Numerous historical documents from these early days place families of Christopher Sr. and his sons - Christopher Jr. and Robert Harris - Samuel's father-in-law, as living on Tates Creek in the Shallowford area. The Tates Creek enumeration lists a total of 4 males and 5 females and appears to be a 3 generation family, considering there are:
1 male & 1 female over 45 [Robert & Nancy (Grubbs) Harris -parents of Rebeccah]
1 male 26-44 [Tyree Harris - the brother of Rebeccah (Harris) Haden]
2 males under 10, children of Tyree & Sally (Garland) Harris [(1) Overton, (2) Caleb]
2 females 16-25 [(1) Rebeccah Harris, (2) Sarah "Sally" (Garland) Harris - wife of Tyree Harris]
2 females under 10, children of Tyree & Sally (Garland) Harris [(1) Purlina, (2) Malinda]

SAMUEL'S SECOND MARRIAGE TO FRANCES, "FANNY" (HARRIS) BLACK (1793 - 1888)
was in 1835, after Rebeccah died in January, since a sales deed of Jan 1836 for his and his father's family home at the head of Black Lick Creek was transacted, about a year after Rebeccah died.
According to William Harris Miller's work, 'Histories and Genealogies' (1906) he cites on page 297; Frances "Fannie" Harris was born 10 Sep 1793, daughter of Christopher Harris (the Junior) and Elizabeth Grubbs - a sister to Nancy Grubbs, who married Robert Harris, above. Sisters Elizabeth and Nancy Grubbs who married the Christopher Jr. and Robert Harris brothers, were also sisters to Higgason Grubbs, who married LUCY HARRIS, who was a daughter of JAMES & MARY HARRIS.

Frances/"Fannie" Harris was married first to Mr. [Joseph] Black SR., 26 Feb 1815 (bond date). Christopher Harris, was the father of the bride and security for the bond.
Frances "Fannie" had at least three children with Joseph Black SR., all born by 1820:
1) Margaret 'Peggy' Black b. 28 Dec 1815
2) Christopher Harris Black b. 17 Feb 1816
3) Joseph S. Black (JR.): b. 25 Mar 1819; d. 3 Oct 1871; m. Emilly C. (Harris) Black: b. 23 Mar 1818; d. 4 Apr 1885. Emily was d/o George L. Harris (1778 - 1849) & Rachel Winfred McAlister (1779 - 1855). George L. Harris was s/o Nathan Harris & Sarah "Sally" Knight.

In Miller's book it cites; "Secondly, Fanny [Frances] married Thomas Ernest, and thirdly to Samuel Hayden" To date, no evidence/link has been found suggesting Fanny was ever married to a Thomas Ernest. A Thomas Earnest had lived in Warren County, where Fannie's parents moved to in 1816.

Samuel's second wife Frances "Fannie" (Harris) Black, was a granddaughter of Christopher Harris SR., and daughter of Christopher Harris JR., who had both spent time in/at and around Fort Boonesborough during it's earlier Daniel Boone days and who had accumulated much land on the banks of the Kentucky River in the Otter, Tate's , Muddy, Silver and Licking Paint Creek areas, as a large number of land deeds exist for many HARRIS family members in these areas. Chris SR & Chris JR. were both Baptist ministers and Fannie's's father, Chris JR., had relocated with his family and at least one other brother of Frances, from Madison County, to Simpson County, a few households away from where Fannie (Harris) Black had moved to, by 1830.

Samuel H. Haden and Frances "Fanny" (Harris) Black were married on 28 Jan 1836, almost 1 year to the date after his first wife died. Then, SAMUEL H. HADEN sells his land in Logan Co, whereby his 2nd wife is listed, signed and releases her dower as, "FRANCES HADEN". As noted, Frances "Fannie" (Harris) Black had moved to Simpson County by 1830, with her children.

The first male child born to Samuel H. Haden Sr. and Rebecca Harris is named WILLIAM, honoring Samuel's father William. In conjunction, the second male child born to Samuel H. Haden and Rebeccah Harris was appropriately named ROBERT HARRIS Haden, honoring Rebeccah's father, Robert Harris.

Samuel & REBECCA (HARRIS) HADEN, had their first child born on Aug 7 1814, about one year after their marriage bonding date. Samuel's second wife, FRANCES 'FANNIE' (HARRIS) BLACK had ALL of her three children born to her and her first husband, JOSEPH BLACK, during the same time period as the dates of births for the children of Samuel H. Haden Sr. and Rebeccah (Harris) Haden. Rebeccah (Harris) Haden and Frances (Harris) Black - Haden, were 1st cousins/two different people.

In the 1830 census, Samuel's second wife, FRANCES "FANNY BLACK", is listed as a widow and as head of household in Simpson Co.
FRANCES BLACK Residence:
2 M 10-14 [Christopher Black 13, Joseph S. Black Jr. 11]
1 F 10-14 [Margaret "Peggy" Black 14]
1 F 30-39 [Frances (Harris) Black - 37]

Here, Frances (Harris) Black, is in the right place to marry Samuel H. Haden. There's nothing to show that Samuel lived in Simpson County, before moving there ca. 1836.

In 1830, Frances (Harris) Black was living 2 census households from her father -
Christopher Harris Jr household:
1 M 20-29 [ likely grandson b. 1801-1809]
1 M 70-79 [Christopher Harris JR. - father of Frances]
1 F 70-79 [Elizabeth (Grubbs) Harris - mother of Frances]

In the 1830 Simpson County census, Frances (Harris) Black was counted 5 households from her son's GEORGE L. HARRIS household:
1 M 15-19
2 M 20-29
1 M 50-59 [George L. Harris]
1 F 0-4

"On the motion of SAMUEL HADEN ordered that he be appointed guardian to [half-sister] Sally Haden infant orphan of [Samuel's father & step-mother] William Haden Sen'r Dec'd his having executed bond security according to Law." William & last wife Sarah/Sally had a child named Sally, his older daughter Sally was probably already deceased before this child was born. In the division of the slaves of William Haden, a child Sally receives her share as well as the Proctor children, the children of the first Sally, deceased. Samuel H. Haden SR was appointed as guardian for his half sister, Sarah I./J. "Sally" Haden, after their father William died in 1819, and his step-mother died in 1822.

5 Jan 1821 Logan Co Deed Book L, p.244.. The heirs of William Haden SR. make out a deed to SAMUEL HADEN for 271 acres that his father William had given him. The land had been surveyed for Samuel H. but the deed was not made when William SR. died. The land borders that of William Haden Jr, Samuel's brother. This deed lists all the heirs of the father, William Haden SR. and the guardians of the minor children.

1829 Tax Roll for tax year 1828.
SAMUEL HADEN declared 5 children between 4 and 15 years old. In 1828, Samuel had Mary E. age 2 so she wouldn't be counted; Catherine age 4; Benjamin age 7; Tyree age 9; Ann age 11, Robert age 12, William age 14. That would be 6 children, but then he was reporting in 1829, so William would have turned 15 - if he was omitted that's 5 children between 15 & 4.

1836 is last year Samuel is on Logan Co Tax Roll with land on Black Lick Fork of Gasper River.

The following deed is for a tract of land sold by Samuel that he inherited of his father William after his death. It is highly likely the original William Haden Homestead, "the first brick home in Logan County, built in the early 1800s at the head waters of Black Lick Creek, which the remnants of the foundation can still be seen from above, as displayed on Samuel's memorial pictures.

Dated 28 Jan 1836; Logan Co KY Deed Book U, p.231-233

Both cemeteries, especially the Wand Cemetery are in very bad shape (very few stones left). I thought I had a picture of the stone, but was mistaken. I will get there this spring and make one. Note about Simpson County, Kentucky Court Records . . . A fire on 16 May 1882, destroyed most county court records. Deeds were later reconstructed from originals held by the owners. Circuit court records were not affected.

Gratitude and credit to Kay Haden for her insightful compilation, Leaves of the Tree, where she has documented in expanded detail upon Dorothy Kabler Haden's work - John Haden of Virginia (1968).

Biography compilation by 3X great grandson, Mark Hayden.

Harris]
1 F 0-4
1 F 5-9
