In 1861 he was appointed chaplain of the 11th Iowa Infantry. He died at Durant of illness following the Battle of Shiloh (TN). Burial at Janesville, WI, where his widow went after his death and where she was buried. His name is on the headstone with other family members at Oak Hill Cemetery.
