Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was a professor of rhetoric and oratory at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, when he took a leave of absence to serve in the Civil War, in 1862. He briefly served as Chaplain of the 19th Maine Volunteer Infantry before being commissioned Major, US Volunteers. He served on the staff of Major General Oliver O. Howard the most of the war before being commissioned Colonel and commander of the 46th United States Colored Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers,on March 13, 1865 for "meritorious services during the war", and was mustering out of the Army in 1868. He then served as Adjutant-General of the Freedman's Bureau, helped establish Howard University, Washington, D.C. and served as a professor there. In 1874 he was appointed secretary of the Board of Indian Commissioners by President Ulysses S. Grant and served until 1900.
