It is probable, but not certain, that Alexander was cared for in his youth by his mother, Mary Bowman, and John Yeats (1796? - 18__), who Mary married about three years after Alexander's birth.
On 25 Aug 1850 Alexander married Catherine Mark (1832 - 1903) in Slains, Aberdeenshire. They had nine children:
* Alexander Shewan (1852 - 1923)
* Jane Shewan McAra (1853 - 1935)
* James Shewan (1856 - 1936)
* Charles Yeats Shewan (1860 - 1943)
* Mary Bowman Shewan (1863 - 1865)
* David Maxwell Shewan (1865 - 1932)
* William J. Shewan (1867 - 1947)
* Robert Shewan (1870 - 1939)
* George Anderson Shewan (1872 - 1____)
In addition to his nine children by his wife Catherine, Alexander also fathered an illegitimate son, Thomas Shewan (1856 - 1932) by Margaret Mitchell, a domestic servant. When Thomas was age ten, Alexander acknowledged paternity and Thomas then took the Shewan surname.
Alexander's last known residence was the Crags of Balmudie, where he worked as a farm servant. Alexander died of chronic bronchitis in Belhelvie on Jun 23, 1875. He was approximately 48 years old. His wife Catherine survived him.
Alexander's burial location is not known.
