Sophia married John Stephens on 26 May 1835 in Greenwich, New York and had two children with him--sons Walter (b.1835 NY) and George (b.1840 IN).

Sophia married for a second time circa 1846. Her second husband was James Lyon. James and Sophia appeared together on the 1850 Census, living in Berrien Co., Michigan, where James was earning a living as a wheelright. With the couple were the two daughters they had had together--Ellen (b. 1847) and Harriet (b.1848), along with Sophia's two sons Walter, aged 15, and George, aged 10.

By the 1860 Census, James and Sophia had moved the family to Union Township, Marshall Co., Indiana. James was working as a mechanic. Daughters Ellen, aged 13, and Harriet, aged 11, were with their parents, but Sophia's sons Walter and George were out on their own.

James and Sophia's daughter Harriet married Charles Jerome Swezey on 4 Jul 1865, and daughter Ellen married Daniel N. Dressler on 22 Feb 1866, both marriages taking place in Marshall County. Sophia got to see both her daughters marry, but she died soon after on 24 Sep 1866 at age 55.

James would remarry, but when he died in 1895, his family had him laid to rest at Sophia's side.
