" JAMES STERLING was born in Coleraine, North of Ireland, Jan. 6, 1742. His parentage is not definitely known, but he is supposed to have been the son of William Sterling of Bedford and Cumberland counties, Pennsylvania, whose name appears many times in the Archives of Penn. His mother was, without much doubt, a Hunter, given name probably Jane, and a sister of James Hunter, who brought James Sterling to America about 1754.
" The records of the Adjutant General's office, State of New Jersey, show that James Sterling was commissioned captain, First Company of Col. Joseph Borden's First Regiment, Burlington Co. Militia, Aug. 26, 1775; commissioned second major, Col. Bowes Reed's First Regiment, Burlington Co. Militia, Sept. 28, 1776...
" He risked his reputation, his fortune and his all in the support of the independence of the United States.
" About the close of the war he returned to Burlington, where he continued to reside till the close of his life, and again went into the mercantile business. He accumulated a large estate..."
--excerpts from "Major James Sterling of Burlington, New Jersey, and His Descendants" by Edward Boker Sterling
