COUNTY RESIDENT WAS INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN AS ZINNIA SEED GROWER
Ira E. Deer, of Providence, internationally known as a zinnia and zinnia seed grower, died 3:30 o'clock Tuesday morning in the Johnson County Memorial Hospital.
He had been in failing health for several years and when his condition became critical about five weeks ago, he was admitted to the hospital.
Funeral services have been arranged by 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home and burial is to be in the Hopewell Cemetery.
Friends may call at funeral home Wednesday afternoon from 2 until 5 o'clock, in the evening from 7 to 9 and until time for the services. The are invited to attend the rites.
Mr. Deer was born on a farm near Providence on Oct. 15, 1871 and his parents were the late Henry J. and Joanna Simpson Deer. He was educated in the union township schools.
On September 11, 1904, Mr. Deer was married to Cora Sutton and for a while he was a farmer. Mr. Deer became interested in flowers and especially in the zinnias and with the help of his wife began the growing of these flowers on a small scale.
As their business increased and became well-known over Indiana, they enlarged their flower gardens each year and began the selling of seed. At first the zinnia seeds were mailed to different parts of the state as the business grew. Then soon this became nationally known and for the last few years while Mr. Deer was still physically able to care for his business, it became internationally recognized.
He was a member of the Providence Christian Christian Church and the Union Village Masonic Lodge at Providence.
Two sisters, Mrs. James Desslar of Franklin, and Mrs. Everett L Bridges, of Indianapolis are the survivors.
Mrs. Deer died July 22, 1947
