Matthew Brophy

Mathew Brophy, son of Walter Brophy and Sarah Brophy formerly Fegan, was born at 12 Cemetery Avenue, Glasnevin, on 26 November 1882.
His father was a Stone Cutter. He died in 1905.

In the 1911 census, the Brophy family were living at 10 Munster Street, Phibsboro
present were
Sarah Brophy, aged 51, a widow, born in Co. Dublin,
Matthew, son, aged 28, a Post Office Sorting Clerk,
Joseph, son, aged 22, a Commercial Clerk - Drugs,
John, son, aged 19, an Apprentice to an Engine Fitter,
William, son, aged 17, a Commercial Clerk, Engineering,
Mary, daughter, aged 15, a Scholar,
Kathleen, daughter, aged 13, a Scholar,
Anna, daughter, aged 8, a Scholar,
all of the children had been born in Dublin City.

Marriage
Matthew Brophy, aged 30, a bachelor, a Clerk, from Dublin, son of Walter Brophy, a Mason, married Mary Costello, aged 30, a Shop Assistant, from Clonmore, daughter of Martin Costello, a Farmer, on 19 February 1912, at Inch Church, Thurles, Co. Tipperary.
The witnesses were,
Joseph Brophy,
Nora Costello.

Matthew was an employee of the Post Office, working onboard the Royal Mail Ship "Leinster" when it was sunk by torpedoes fired from a German Submarine on the morning of 10 October 1918, whilst enroute from Kingstown [now Dun Laoghaire] to Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales.
His body was not recovered.

There is a family storey that his brother John, who was home on leave from the Royal Navy, told his mother and sister that he had found him, but that the coffin buried in the family plot was actually empty.
