Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Private in Company G, 21st Ohio Volunteer Infantry . He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery as a participant as a Mitchell Raider in the famed “Great Locomotive Chase” in April 1862. His citation reads “One of the 19 of 22 men (including 2 civilians) who, by direction of Gen. Mitchell (or Buell), penetrated nearly 200 miles south into enemy territory and captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, Ga., in an attempt to destroy the bridges and track between Chattanooga and Atlanta”. He was captured by pursuing Confederate forces along with the other Raiders. His Medal was issued in September 1863. 22 other participants were awarded the Medal of Honor, which were the first ever issued. He was the last surviving member of the Raiders.
