Age 30 years, 10 months, 27 days, as entered on his death record in Fitchburg, MA.

Unmarried son of Bezalcel and Eunice Taft. The inscription states he was born Sept. 2, 1831.

Civil War Veteran

Jerome, a sycthe maker, enlisted in Company A, Massachusetts 53rd Infantry Regiment on 17 Oct 1862 as a Sergeant.
He was commissioned 1st Lieutenant on 21 May 1863 and promoted to Captain on 10 Jun 1863.
Captain Jerome K. Taft, was wounded at Port Hudson, La., on June 14, 1863 and died at New Orleans, July 2nd, 1863 of a gunshot wound in the thigh.

From "Fitchburg in the War of the Rebellion," by Henry A. Willis, 1866. p. 181:
Funeral of Captains Bailey and Taft, of the 53rd Regiment.
"Captains George H. Bailey, and Jerome K. Taft were both killed at Port Hudson, La.
The former fell May 25th, 1863, and the latter June 14th, 1863.
Both commanded Company A, of this town, Bailey having been commissioned as Captain ten days before his death, and Taft but four days before he fell.
Their remains were brought home soon after the return of the regiment, and their funeral occurred October 5th, 1863.
As on former similar occasions, no pains were spared to make the ceremonies worthy of those in whose honor they were held.
The fact that both had commanded the same company, and fell within so short a time of each other, added interest and sadness to the scene, now that, side by side, they rested on one bier.
Both Fitchburg companies of the regiment, were out for escort duty, and many of their brother officers were present to do honor to their fallen comrades.
The obsequies were a credit to those who had them in charge, and a noble tribute to the brave men they commemorated."
