Helen Cato Thomas
May 9, 1925 - Sept 17, 2014 Helen Cato Thomas of Morris, AL was born May 9, 1925 in Blount County, AL and passed away on September 17, 2014. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church, but for many years attended First Baptist Church, Warrior, AL. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Dewey E. and Lida Flora Barnwell Cato; also, her husband, James Odis Thomas, brothers, J.D. Cato, and Edron L. Cato; and a grandson, Charles Mason III. Helen graduated from Mortimer Jordan High School in 1943. Ten years later she entered Samford University (Howard College) and received her B.S. degree in Secondary Education in 1956. Later she received her M.S. degree from University of Alabama. She taught school for 30 years, first at Hewitt Trussville, and then at Warrior High School; and then principal for 5 years at Kimberly Elementary School; principal at Sandusky Elementary School for 3 years; one year teaching at Bryan Elementary School; the remainder of her years as math teacher at Mortimer Jordan, she was truly a "called" teacher who also had the gift of teaching in Sunday school at her church. She is survived by her sons Charles Mason Jr (Della) of Live Oak, Florida; Paul Thomas of Warrior; step-son Randy Thomas (Suzanne) of Warrior; and her daughter Mary Helen Matthews (John) of Vestavia; brother, Dewey Cato of Gardendale; sister, Frances Horton of Trafford. Her grandchildren are Jane Mason, Julia Mason, Coy Thomas, John Thomas Matthews, Laura Matthews, and Margaret Matthews; one great grandchild, Shaun Lieto; and a host of nieces and nephews who she loved like her own children. A visitation will be held Saturday, September 20th, at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel from 6 until 8 PM with chapel funeral services on Sunday, beginning at 2 PM. Interment will follow in Bethel United Methodist Cemetery in Trafford.
