Sarah is a daughter of Absolom Looney, born 1804, and Mary Ann Price Looney Asher, born 1806? (1810), both born in Tennessee. After the death of Absolom abt. 1847, Mary Ann married Samuel Asher, September 14, 1848. Mary Asher is widowed with two children at home in 1860. It is believed Mary Ann died in 1880, at age 70 she was living with Sarah and family in the 1880 Census listed as Mary Looney.

Sarah married Wiley Blunt (Blount) Mitchell May 16, 1847, Polk County, MO by Abner Spence, JP. Wiley was born April 6, 1827 and died April 8, 1904, Fair Play, MO. Some believe Sarah was a Native American of the Cherokee tribe.

Feb,2015-Contributor Alice Looney states that Sarah 3X great grandfather Robert Looney came to the United States in the 1730's and settled in what is now Buchanan County, Virginia. The family built a settlement with a fort, mill and ferry crossing. She doesn't believe Sarah's family line has Native American ties.

The 1870 Stockton, Madison TS, Cedar County,Missouri Census lists the following children of Wiley, 43, and Sarah, 41:

W?, 17; Rhoda J, 13; David M, 12; James L, 10; Martha D, 6; Archibald L, 4; Sarah A, 2.

Another older son is John H "Jim" Mitchell born March 28, 1948.

Sarah died at age 92 years, 6 months and 4 days. Mary Buckner, Adonis, MO is the informant on her Missouri Death Certificate. Sarah's MDC lists her birth year as 1826, Tennessee. Census records and family sources list as above.

April 4, 2024 - My name is Gayla Nickels Wells. I grew up in Fair Play, Missouri and I'm the 4th great granddaughter of Sarah Black Looney Mitchell. I just want to confirm that Sarah was a Cherokee Indian; I have her tribal registration. Besides having a copy of her registration, I also know this because my family over the years confirmed this. My 2nd great grandmother Susan Abbott Copeland told us her grandmother was full blood Cherokee and Susan had visits from her Indian relatives at times. This was a knows fact within my family.

Saran Black Looney Mitchell's son Jim Mitchell was a performer in the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show and rode the bucking bronco Dynomite. Pictures of him and information on his performance can be found by googling his name.
