The 1870 Census has him as 17 years - Birth about 1853.
The 1900 Census has him as 48 years - Birth Feb. 1852.
The 1910 Census has him as 59 years - Birth about 1851.
The 1920 Census has him as 70 years - Birth about 1850.
The 1930 Census has him as 84 years - Birth about 1846

WILLIAM RILEY MITCHELL was a retired minister, having resided in Avilla, McDonald Twp., Jasper county, Missouri that was about 10 miles east of Carthage. His death certificate indicated that he had lived there for 12 years and that is where he passed away. He was 84 years old and his death was attributed to complications of heart and renal failure. He had suffered a stroke in 1929 contributing to paralysis.
s/o Wiley Mitchell (TN) and Sallie Luney (MO) and was the husband of Melissa Mitchell

He was buried in Park Cemetery in Carthage, Missouri on April 21, 1931 under the direction of Knell Mortuary of Carthage.

RETIRED MINISTER DIES

Rev. W. R. Mitchell, 84, Survived by Wife and 11 Children


The Rev. William Riley Mitchell, 84, a retired Free Methodist minister and a resident of this vicinity 12 years, died at 7:10 o'clock last night at his home, 12 miles east of Carthage. He had been bedfast the last four years following a stroke of paralysis. His condition became critical five days ago.
The Rev. Mr. Mitchell was born February 5, 1847 in Cedar county, Missouri. He moved to this community from Cassville.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Melissa Mitchell, and the following children: Mrs. Lillie Smith of Greenfield, MO., Mrs. Margaret Davis of Woodlake, California; Willie and Robert Mitchell and Mrs. Ora O'Neill of Burbank, California; Mrs. Mary Ganaway of Stockton, MO.; Mrs. Laura Steed of Springfield, C. B. Mitchell of Strawn, Kans., Elmer Mitchell of California, Jep Mitchell of Brawley, Calif., Mrs. Nora Burleson of Avilla, Mrs. Nola Grace and Mrs. Pearl Mallory of Carthage; a brother, Dave Mitchell of Fair Play, MO., and a sister, Mrs. Rosie Abbott of Fair Play, Mo.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Church of God on Valley street. The Rev. C. Riddle will be in charge. Burial will be in Park Cemetery.
