A college student from Syracuse was killed Sunday when he was struck by a train near 4103 New Court Ave., DeWitt, Onondaga County sheriff's deputies said.
Daniel Pond , 19, of 161 Stafford Ave. was hit about 1 a.m. by an eastbound CSX freight train, said Deputy William E. Gabriel, a spokesman for the sheriff's department.
The train's engineer, Michael C. Smith of Rensselaer, told deputies he saw the teen on the tracks but was unable to stop the train in time.
Home from Keuka College for the first time since leaving for the start of his freshman year, Pond was out with friends when he was hit, said his aunt, Mary Ellen Jones.
Usually the group of friends - current and former students from Henninger High School, Pond's alma mater - would spend time together at someone's home. But the mild November weather drew the teens outdoors, Jones said.
"He was just hanging out," she said.
The group ended up on New Court Avenue, a strip of industrial buildings just over the city limit in DeWitt and near Norwood Park, where Pond had played Pop Warner football as a member of the Eastwood Bears.
The teens were behind Northeast Interior Systems, watching trains, when the accident occurred, deputies said. Pond was struck by an eastbound train as a westbound train also passed through, Gabriel said.
"He was looking at one (train) and the other hit him," said Patrick Silkey, Pond's stepfather, who said he talked to some of his son's friends who witnessed the accident. "He wasn't aware of the second train."
Witnesses could not be reached directly for comment.
An investigation is continuing. No tickets have been issued and no arrests have been made, Gabriel said. The Onondaga County medical examiner plans to conduct an autopsy.
Pond grew up in Syracuse and graduated in June from Henninger, where he was a starting midfielder for the school's lacrosse team.
He earned honorable mention all-league honors and the Senior Award in his final season. He was home for the Thanksgiving holiday from Keuka College in Keuka Park, where he was majoring in liberal arts, Jones said. Pond was recruited by Keuka to play lacrosse, she said.
Tom Acee, Henninger's varsity lacrosse coach, said the Senior Award tells much about Pond.
"It exemplifies the type of kid who sacrifices everything for the team," he said. Pond wasn't the team's highest scorer, but "when we needed a ground ball, Danny would come up with one."
Acee said he had known Pond since sixth grade, when he spotted him playing basketball at Blessed Sacrament School.
"I saw he had some talent," said Acee, who persuaded Pond to try lacrosse. He picked up the game quickly and was "a hard-nosed, tough kid."
An honor roll student at Henninger, Pond also earned a certificate from the city school district's food service class at Central Technical Vocational Center. He was exploring career possibilities, Jones said. During the food service class, he worked at the Yukon River Grill on Erie Boulevard and at Pascale Wine Bar & Restaurant.
"He lived life to its fullest," Jones said. "He took every opportunity."
He worked last summer at East Syracuse Chevrolet as a car detailer to earn money for college, she said.
"He had a lot of friends," Jones said. Pond liked to go camping with them or with his mother, Gay, and stepfather. Pond also liked spending time with his brother, Stephen, 7, Jones said. Pond's father, Tim, lives in Malone.
"It's a heartbreaker," Acee said. "We're all kind of suffering right now."

The little evergreen tree sits next to Sunnycrest Park skating rink, behind Henninger High School.
It's a small blue spruce tied with red ribbons.
This is a special tree.
There's a memorial stone in front: "Fallen Knight," it reads.
The knight was Daniel Pond , of Eastwood. Dan was killed Nov. 25, 2001, when he was struck by a CSX freight train near New Court Avenue.
He was a Henninger graduate and a freshman at Keuka College. He played lacrosse for Henninger and Keuka. Henninger is the Black Knights.
Pat Silkey, Dan's stepfather, says the tree was the gift of several of Dan's friends, who call themselves "Amateurs and Animals." Some of those pals were with Dan when he died.
"After some consideration, his mother and I decided we would like the tree at his high school athletic field, because he enjoyed all sports," Pat explained. "He loved playing lacrosse for coach Tom Acee (at Henninger) the most."
Pat said the Silkeys talked with Acee and got the needed permissions to put the tree in the park. When it came time to plant the spruce, the coach arranged for two of Dan's teammates, Mike MacDonald and Tom Garbach, to be there and help.
"The final touch was a marker for this memorial," Pat continued. "I contacted friends of ours who own Lutz Monument Co. I met with Karl Lutz, who helped me pick a stone and said he would do whatever was needed at no cost to us.
"When it was done, he met with me and put it in place.
"We want to thank everyone who gave their time and support to us to get this done. Their friendship to Daniel and our family is appreciated more than we can express."
