Civil War Union Brigadier General, South Carolina Governor. An officer who marred his wholly creditable war record with a corrupt after-war career, he commanded a company of Pennsylvania Volunteers in the Mexican War. After the Civil War broke out, he was commissioned Major of the 68th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in November 1861, and eventually rose to Colonel and commander of the regiment. He led his unit in the Vicksburg Campaign, and fought with it at the Battles of Port Gibson, Raymond, Champions Hill and in the capitulation of the city, while part of the XVII Corps. He assumed command of his brigade during the Atlanta Campaign, and fought in Sherman’s March to the Sea. He was promoted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 21, 1865, and was brevetted Major General, US Volunteers the following December. After the war he headed the South Carolina’s Freedman’s Bureau, while retaining his military rank, and was elected as the carpetbagging Governor of South Carolina in 1868. While not the instigator of corruption that was widespread in South Carolina during his time in office, General Scott embraced it and took an active part in the graft. He served until 1877.
