Loving husband, father, and grandfather, Billy H. Mayo, 75, of Littleton passed away, April 12, 2013, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Mayo was born January 16, 1938 in Whitakers, NC to the late Arthur Garland Mayo and Lola Grace Lamm Mayo. He attended public school in Whitakers, NC where he graduated in 1956 with honors. He attended Bridgewater College, Bridgewater, VA and Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, NC where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He graduated with a BS Degree in Science Education from Atlantic Christian College in January of 1961.

He began his teaching career at Stephan Decatur High School in Berlin- Ocean City, MD. He also taught at Laurel High School in Laurel, Delaware and Aurelian Springs School where he met his wife Betty Jean Brewer. He taught at Halifax Academy for four years and became Headmaster in 1973 until he retired in 1999. He was a dedicated educator and counselor who was dearly loved by his students and faculty.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Joan M. Nowell of Whitakers, NC; brothers, Keith C. Mayo of Enfield, NC, Van M. Mayo of Whitakers, NC, Arthur C. Mayo of Nashville, NC and niece, Laura A. Mayo of Enfield, NC.

He is survived by his loving wife of forty-four years, Betty B. Mayo; two daughters, Traie D. Mayo, Kim M. White and husband, Scott, both of Roanoke Rapids, NC; one grandson, Evan Scott White; three sister-in-laws, Barbara Mayo of Enfield, NC, Mary Mayo of Whitakers, NC, and Catherine Cutchin and husband, Dick, of Littleton, NC; one brother-in-law, Don Nowell of Whitakers, NC, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 pm, Monday, April 15, 2013 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling services, and other times at the home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, 175 Ankum Rd., Gasburg, VA, with Pastor Greg Hand and Pastor Greg Powell of Enterprise Baptist Church officiating . Burial will follow in Tabor United Methodist Church, Littleton, NC.
