A talented musician who was an honors student in the Commercial course at Seward, Nebraska, High School, Gilbert made his way west to Hollywood to seek a career in the arts.
The war steered his ambitions in a different direction, and he was set on the path to a successful career in business and real estate. The skills Gilbert deployed as Chief Yeoman in service of naval officers -- terrific interpersonal skills, an innate sense of decorum, organizational acumen, and an impeccable sense of style -- all served him well in civilian life. The fact that he was a terrific dancer didn't hurt either!
His partner of many years, Herman Aptaker (another terrific dancer), predeceased him as did his sister and his parents. He was survived by a niece and nephew and several great-nieces and nephews.

Seward Boy Is
In Defense Work
The following letter, a copy of which was sent to Supt. J. N. Regler of the Seward City Schools, shows that a former Seward high school boy shows rare ability in an important position....
Gentlemen:
This is to certify that Mr. Gilbert Martin Weinberger is at this time serving as an assistant to the undersigned, who is engaged as a consultant in the training and procuring of manpower for the shipbuilding industry on the West Coast under the auspices of the Office of Production Management, Washington D.C.
Mr Weinberger has been my assistant for eight months and his knowledge of the routine of work and his ability to conduct the affairs of business in my frequent absences from my regular office makes him invaluable at this time.
Due to the great pressure under which we are working to procure manpower from the shipbuilding industry, it is essential that I have an efficient and capable male assistant, which Mr. Weinberger has proven to be.
I honestly believe that Mr. Weinberger will be of more service to the National Defense by serving in his present capacity, and I sincerely request that he be deferred from military service due to the fact that he is actively engaged in National Defense work.
Very truly yours,
Svend Pedersen
