Staff Sergeant Thomas H "Harold" Gossett, born 17 Oct 1924, was the son of James Rezzie Gossett and Annie (James) Gossett of Spartanburg, Cherokee County, South Carolina.

In the 1930 census 5-year-old Harold is living with his parents and brother Ray 7 in Gowdeysville Township, Cherokee County, SC. His father is farming. Harold's father died 29 Aug 1937 after a short illness.

In the 1940 census 15-year-old Harrold is living with his widowed mother, maternal uncle Durbin James 46, and siblings Ray 17, and Virginia 7, in Draytonville Township, Cherokee County, SC. Brother Ray is a sprayer in a peach orchard.

Harold enlisted in the Army Air Corps 3 Feb 1943 at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC. He'd had a grammar school education and was single without dependents. His civilian occupation was listed under unskilled manufacture of textiles. He was assigned to the 849th Bomb Squadron of the 490th Bomb Group. Harold was the radio operator and a gunner on B-17 #43-37941 "Miss Ana Bortion" piloted by 1st Lt Charles S Frey flying out of Eye Aerodrome in Suffolk.

The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for South Carolina show Gossett, Thomas H, SSgt from Spartanburg County as killed in action. When their target was not visible through the overcast, the mission was aborted, and they proceeded to return to their base in England. Harold was killed when his plane collided in midair with B-17 #43-38184 piloted by Major Lamont Haas, over the French coast near Dives-sur-Mer returning from Gustavsburg on 1 Sep 1944. The two aircraft broke up and crashed north of Caen. Three of the crew from the Haas aircraft survived. Harold and all of the Frey crew were killed.
