Harold enlisted in the Army Air Corps 3 Feb 1943 at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC. He'd had a grammar school education and was single without dependents. His civilian occupation was listed under unskilled manufacture of textiles. He was assigned to the 849th Bomb Squadron of the 490th Bomb Group. Harold was the radio operator and a gunner on B-17 #43-37941 "Miss Ana Bortion" piloted by 1st Lt Charles S Frey flying out of Eye Aerodrome in Suffolk.
The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for South Carolina show Gossett, Thomas H, SSgt from Spartanburg County as killed in action. When their target was not visible through the overcast, the mission was aborted, and they proceeded to return to their base in England. Harold was killed when his plane collided in midair with B-17 #43-38184 piloted by Major Lamont Haas, over the French coast near Dives-sur-Mer returning from Gustavsburg on 1 Sep 1944. The two aircraft broke up and crashed north of Caen. Three of the crew from the Haas aircraft survived. Harold and all of the Frey crew were killed.
