Died from blood poisoning when he was reloading paper shells for his shotgun with a pair of scissors. The scissors slipped and the point broke into his left hand on the back between the thumb and fore finger.

John was a Civil War Veteran. Co. G, 91st Regiment, Ohio Infantry. He married first, Nancy Pettit, June 7, 1856, Scioto, Ohio, and they divorced. John then married Mary Myers in 1870. He deserted her and their children to go off with a lady named Harriett Hall, whom he loved until the day he died. John had four other children, not with Harriett or his wife Nancy. Mary Myers left John Schoonover at Bow Creek, Philips Co., Kansas. Believe the names of their children were Nettie F. Schoonover; Lillie M. Schoonover; Rosie and Josephine Schoonover and he left them too. It is quite a long, interesting story. When he was dying he only wanted to see his brother, James, who tried as fast as he could to get there, but didn't arrive until after his death. John only called out four names when he was dying. His mother; his brother James Schoonover; son John Schoonover and daughter Mary Schoonover. He had daughters who lived in Kirwin, Kansas, and Harriett did not know if they knew he was dead. He left his son, John Schoonover his little 33 revolver and his daughter, Anna Schoonover, his big colt revolver. He wanted Harriett to live with Anna after he died. He told Harriett when he died he did not want Nancy to have anything, "not even the tip of his finger."

John had several children. Some with Mary and some with Nancy Pettit Schoonover. He never married Hariett Hall and they had no children.
