A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of thirty-two in Franklin County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Chambersburg November 4 as a private with Co. G, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 12, 1863.

In 1870, he was a distiller living with his family in Washington Township, Franklin County. On February 9, 1892, he applied for a disability pension and received it.
