Richard was born in Dec 1812 in Camborne, Cornwall, England (probably the 25th but I'm still confirming that. )The son of William and Mary (Lethlean) Thomas. He married twice once in England to Mary Gartrell producing three daughters, Mary, Ann and Louisa. His wife died on board the "Orient" during the crossing to America. Their youngest daughter Louisa died shortly after arriving. During the journey he met widow Elizabeth Barkell Trebilcock and her young daughter. She helped Richard care for his children after the death of Mary, and was married to him once they arrived. Together they settled in the Southwestern area of Wisconsin where he worked as a miner and she gave birth to at least 12 more children. (Though family lore has it at 16)In order James(infant), Margaret, Richard, William, Louisa, Joseph, James, Jacob, Jane, Martha, John, Henry and Charles.
