Manuela María was the daughter of Corporal Alejo Antonio Duarte y Espinosa and Salinan neophyte María Gertrudis (no surname). She was born at Mission San Antonio de Padua where she was baptized January 6, 1780 (SAP Baptism 00606). She married soldado José Francisco García y Acuña at the Monterey Presidio Chapel on October 30, 1792 (SC Marriage 00466). Manuela died at Pueblo San José de Guadalupe and was buried in the Mission Santa Clara de Asís cemetery April 1, 1817 (SAP Death 04912).
