María Josefa Gabriela Pasquala García y Duarte was born at the Presidio of Monterey where she was baptized in the Presidio Chapel (San Carlos) March 20, 1800 (SC Baptism 02303). She was the daughter of soldado Francisco García (born Sinaloa) and Manuela María Duarte. María married soldado Santos Escamilla. María died at Mission San Luis Obisbo de Tolosa and was buried in the mission cemetery March 28, 1821 (SLO Death 01897).
