Norman served as a Staff Sergeant on B-29-40-BW "Joltin Josie" #42-24614, 873rd Bomber Squadron, 498th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Worcester County, Massachusetts prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on May 1, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Machinist and also as Single, without dependents.

Norman was declared "Missing In Action" when the "Joltin Josie" suffered an explosion shortly after takeoff from Saipan Atol and crashed into the sea.

They were assigned to mission 51 along with 114 other B-29's that were dispatched to attack the Nakajima aircraft plant in Tokyo during the war.

B-29 "Joltin Josie" #42-24614 was one of six B-29's lost of this mission.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
