A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Darnestown, Maryland, October 17, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Frederick, Maryland, December 10 as a private with Co. K, 3rd New York Cavalry, but promoted to corporal October 24, 1862, and to sergeant sometime in May or June 1863. On December 16, 1863, he received promotion to the rank of 2nd lieutenant and transferred to Co. F, 2nd U.S. Colored Cavalry, and then promoted go 1st lieutenant, date as yet unknown. He was killed in action at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia. His compiled military service records spell his last name "Maines."
