- OBITUARY -
Niagara Falls Gazette, 30 March 1943
Private Ronald Charles Banks, 19, of the United States Army Air Forces, died in the post hospital at Syracuse university, Syracuse, N. Y., on Sunday, while his mother, Mrs. Charles F. Banks, of 1856 Michigan avenue, this city, was in Atlantic City, N. J., where she had gone to visit him. News of his death was withheld yesterday until his mother returned home and was notified. Private Banks left his studies as a Freshman in the engineering course at Niagara university here about a month ago to join the Army Air Forces. He was stationed at Atlantic City last week when his mother, accompanied by a friend, left here to visit him. When Mrs. Banks arrived in the New Jersey city, however, she learned that he had been transferred to Syracuse on Thursday. Meanwhile, other members of the family here were informed that the young aviation student had contracted meningitis shortly after arriving in Syracuse and had died on Sunday. They got in touch with his mother and had her return here, where the tragic news awaited her. A graduate of the Niagara Falls high school, young Banks was a member of the Sea Scouts and a past captain of the Sons of the American Legion here. His father, Charles F. Banks, is a veteran of the first World war. He was an only son. Private Banks was a nephew of Dr. William Murtha, Miss Marion Murtha, Clark Shipston, Fred Shipston and Miss Jane Shipston, of this city, and Edmund Shipston, of Youngstown, N. Y., and a cousin of Mrs. F. Van Aucker, of this city. Funeral services, with military honors, will be held at the family home Thursday afternoon, with the Rev. David Henry Weeks officiating. Burial will be in Riverdale cemetery.
