Lucille Papworth Crismon passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at Highland Care Center in Holladay, Utah with her loving family by her side. She was 99 years old and resided at 2197 East Lorita Way (8020 South) in Cottonwood Heights, Utah at the time of her death.
She was born Lucille Alice Papworth at the family home located at 227 West 500 North in the Marmalade District of the Capitol Hill neighborhood in Salt Lake City, Utah on Monday, January 25, 1909 to Richard and Mary Hannah Llewellyn Papworth, she had three sisters and three brothers; Virginia, Cecil, Maxine, Richard, Lynn, and Ferrol. She married William Reeve "Bill" Crismon on July 25, 1939 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Together they raised two sons, Tom and Bill. Her beloved husband passed away on October 1, 1972.
Lucille was a true pioneer of modern womanhood. Born of Welsh ancestry and of slight stature, she was a strong willed person, who at an early age viewed life as full of promise. As a young single adult, she ventured to Monterey, California during the great depression and became successful as a hairdresser. Later, still single and full of adventure, she moved to Chicago, Illinois and continued her young career. Upon returning to Salt Lake in the thirties, she was introduced to Bill Crismon, who operated his own silver mine in the eastern desert of Nevada, because at the time jobs were scarce. They married and he started a new career with United Airlines. They later settled in Denver, Colorado. In the late fifties, they returned to their roots in Salt Lake. She decided to open her own gift shop with her Sister in Law, Helen Papworth across from Salt Lake Temple Square. When the new Salt Lake International Airport was opened in 1961, she and her husband Bill were the first successful bidders of the retail news and gift concessions. After Bill's passing in 1972, she continued and with time the business grew from two stores to many specialty shops over a thirty five year span employing over 125 people. She retired in the late 1990's, but the shops and her vision continue to prosper today under the guidance of her family.
Lucille was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters and most of her contemporaries, friends, business associates and relatives. She was survived by her two sons and two daughters-in-law; Tom (Kathy) and Bill (Sue). She had ten grandchildren; Matthew, Scot, Ron, Hillary, Brandon, Troy, Robb, Chandler, Brooke, and Annie and nineteen great grandchildren.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 11:00 AM at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary Chapel located at 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South) in Sandy, Utah. A visitation was held from 9:45 until 10:45 AM prior to the Services.
Lucille was laid to rest following the conclusion of the Funeral Services at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery beside her beloved husband.
