Maxine Papworth Nelden Schutte 1910 ~ 2007 Maxine Papworth Nelden Schutte passed away January 6, 2007, in Sandy, Utah, with her beloved daughter Diane at her side. Maxine was born in Salt Lake City on November 1, 1910, to Richard and Mary Hannah Llewellyn Papworth. She had three brothers, Richard, Lynn, and Ferrol, and three sisters, Virginia, Cecil, and Lucille. She married Lawrence Charles Nelden September 15, 1928. Together they raised two children, Diane and Larry. Lawrence passed away in 1970. Maxine later married Hank Schutte who died in 1988. A Welsh lady of small stature, Maxine lived a plentiful life. She could do anything. As a young girl, she learned to sew for a needy family. Later she created her own fashionable suits and played classical concertos and popular melodies on the piano by ear and by training. She was a devoted mother and adventurous, having traveled to Canada, the Caribbean, South America, Europe, and Asia. With her artist's hands she sketched portraits and used oils to paint her most vibrant memories. Maxine was also an astute businesswoman who started Nelden's Gifts with her husband Lawrence, expanding later with their son, Larry, into hardware and sporting goods. Eventually the family opened the Utah and Idaho Hickory Farms' franchises. She earned her Real Estate license in her sixties and continued bowling and golfing in her eighties. Maxine was preceded in death by her son, Larry Nelden Jr., in 2004. She is survived by her sister, Lucille Crismon; daughter, Diane Barton; daughter-in-law, Linda Nelden; five grandchildren, Rick Chase, Brian Barton, Scott Barton (Terri), Laura Kvinge (Marius) and Charlie Nelden. She has 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and one last treasured Maltese, Taj. We wish to thank the Alta Ridge Alzheimer's Center and Maxine's special caregiver, Ruth. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 12, 2007 at 12:00 noon with visitation one hour prior at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy.
