James Burtenshaw was born at Battersea to John and Sarah Loveland Burtenshaw. He came to America with his mother, brother Stephen, and sister Mary Ann on the sailing ship William Tappscott in May, 1862. It was a six-week journey to New York City and they were extremely happy to be welcomed by their husband and father who had been working there for two years. The family traveled by train to Lawrence, Nebraska, then by oxteam continued on across the plains. On the way, James took very sick with dysentery and died at the age of three years and twelve days. He was wrapped in his father's white shirt and buried in the same grave with an elderly lady who had died the night before near Green River, Wyoming.
