Robert (Bob) Conway Martin, retired US Navy Chief Boatswain's Mate, of Hendersonville, NC, died Saturday, December 26, 2009, in Mt. Pleasant, SC after a long illness. Chief Martin resided in Hendersonville, NC since retiring from the U.S. Capitol Police, Washington, DC in 1979.
Chief Martin was born in Martinsburg, WV, on August 29, 1927, to George Amos Martin and Ruth Mary Zeigler Martin.
Chief Martin joined the Navy in September 1944, serving in the Pacific Campaign. He also served in the European Campaign, Korean War and in Vietnam. He earned numerous commendations including the Navy Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Presidential and Navy Unit commendation ribbons, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star, World War II Victory Medal and Combat Action Ribbons while serving aboard the USS Benewah [APB-55] in Vietnam. Chief Martin served two tours of duty with the Navy Ceremonial Guard in Washington DC, during the years 1951-1953 and 1962-1965. During his second tour with the Ceremonial Guard, he was a member of the team in charge of the US Naval participation in President Kennedy's funeral. Chief Martin retired from active duty in October, 1969 and began a new career with the U.S. Capitol Police.
Chief Martin was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police, U.S. Capitol Police Retired Officers Association, Fleet Reserve Association Branch 361 Hendersonville, Civil War Round-table of Western North Carolina, American Legion Post 77 Hendersonville, U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard Alumni Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Mobile Riverine Force Association.
Chief Martin was preceded in death by his sisters, Vauda Rauchwerger, Juanita McCormick, Imogene Grove O'Dell, Betty Sigler, Joyce Schuman and a twin sister, Roberta Martin and his brothers, Ralph W. Martin and George A. Martin, Jr. His sister, Alda Sue Martin, died in August, 2012. Chief Martin is survived by a son, Robert C. Martin Jr. and his wife, Kim, of Parkton, Md., a stepson, Donnie L. Elmore, of Derwood, Md., a stepdaughter, Diane Smith, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and a former spouse, Cornelia Martin, of Mt. Pleasant, SC Chief Martin had seven grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held at J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd,, Mt. Pleasant, SC, on Saturday, January 2, 2010. Interment was March 2010, at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, where Chief Martin received full military honors.
♥~ Our Uncle Bobby was a well loved and respected member of our family. He was the youngest Brother of our Mother, Joyce Martin Schuman. Our Mother and Uncle Bobby joined the US Navy on the same day in September, 1944.
