Gustavo Jose Lopez, native of Calexico, California passed away July 19, 2012 in San Diego surrounded by family. He was 63.

Gustavo was born in Calexico to city pioneers, Guadalupe & Teodulo Lopez. He was a proud Calexico "Bulldog" who graduated from CUHS in 1967. He received his degree in Criminal Justice from SDSU.

Gustavo also served honorably in the U.S Army. While stationed in Germany, he met the love of his life Elizabeth Baker. They returned to the States, married and resided in San Diego where one of Gustavo's proudest accomplishments was his two wonderful children, Gustavo Daniel & Elizabeth Michelle.

Like his mother, Gustavo was a natural salesperson who worked in retail for years and along with his wife, owned a clothing store in North Park. He also invested in and managed several San Diego apartment buildings & later worked as a real estate agent.

Gustavo was an avid traveler, photographer & dog lover but he will always be remembered for his devotion to his family. His greatest joy came from babysitting his grandkids, celebrating birthdays & sharing a meal with his wife, children and extended family.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; son, Gustavo Jr. and wife Nicole; daughter, Elizabeth; grandchildren, Addison & Colin; siblings, Humberto, Olivia & Maria Teresa; and numerous nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Teodulo in 1982, his godson Erik Walther in 1997 and his mother Guadalupe in 2006.

Gus was a loyal, generous soul to those he touched and with his trademark hearty laugh, constant smile and warm blue eyes he always made those around him feel welcome. While we all miss him greatly, we take comfort in knowing that he is at peace.

A Rosary will be held on Thursday, July 26 at El Camino Memorial, Sorrento Valley at 4 pm. A Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, July 27 at Mary Star of the Sea, La Jolla at 10 am followed by graveside services at El Camino Memorial, Sorrento Valley. Reception will follow immediately after the burial at Mary Star of the Sea Parish Hall.
