He was born Oct. 19,1912 in Howard County, a son of Eddie and Ethel (Powell) Cates.
Cates retired after working 38 years at Pipe Creek Stone Co. He was a member of Swayzee Christian Church, Lions Club and Grant Masonic Lodge 637.
Surviving are his wife, the former Martha Eltzroth; a son, Kenneth J. Cates of Swayzee; two setpsons, Richard Eltzroth of Kokomo and Jack Eltzroth of San Jose, Calif; four brothers, Robert Cates of Muncie, Lester Cates of Marion and Arthur and Jesse Cates, both of Sweetser; three sisters, Mrs. Gerald (Velma) Wolfe and Mrs. Edgar (Mary) Cook, both of Marion, and Waneta Collins of Fairmount; a stepgranddaughter; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Rybolt Funeral Home. The Rev. Tom Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Thrailkill Cemetery here. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary.
