He served the Confederate States Army as Captain of Company A of the Fifteenth Regiment of Virginia Infantry. Being a minister, he served as Chaplain until he was elected captain on 25 April 1862. The son of Larkin and and Sarah Emily Fry Willis, his mother died when he was less than a year old. His father re-married and with his second wife had 20 more children. Edward attended the University of Virginia Law School and graduated in 1842. He married Virginia Ann Sneed and they had nine children, three boys and six girls. In 1849 Edward left for California to look for gold. In 1850 he was elected Judge of Sacramento County. Also in 1850 he founded the First Baptist Church of Sacramento which met in his home. In 1854 he was ordained a minister and left the bench to establish the First Baptist Church of Oakland. In 1856 he returned to Virginia and became minister of Leigh Street Baptist Church in Richmond. During the War he served with his son and four half brothers. The 15th Virginia Infantry fought in the Peninsula Campaign and at Sharpsburg. They fought around Richmond,in Tennesee and North Carolina. After the War he returned to the ministry, serving in Gordonsville, Orange, Alexandria and Winchester, Virginia. In 1872 he was in charge of the Winchester Female Institute. Later he led Alderson-Broaddus College. His wife, Virginia died in 1875 and he married twice more to Mollie Rogers and then Eva Taylor.
