Lawrence apparently was the only child of Louis Dourlet, a native of Howard County, Indiana, and Clementine Schmidt Dourlet, a native of Henry County, Indiana. Although the 1930 census lists Lawrence and his parents as living in Howard County, Indiana, by 1940 the family had moved to the Duke area of Scioto County in southeastern Ohio, near Rarden. Lawrence and his father farmed in the Duke area of Scioto County off State Route 772.
