What I know of Lawrence I learned from reading a journal he wrote during the last full year of his life, 1940. The journal spans the dates January 1 - December 31, 1940.

Lawrence apparently was the only child of Louis Dourlet, a native of Howard County, Indiana, and Clementine Schmidt Dourlet, a native of Henry County, Indiana. Although the 1930 census lists Lawrence and his parents as living in Howard County, Indiana, by 1940 the family had moved to the Duke area of Scioto County in southeastern Ohio, near Rarden. Lawrence and his father farmed in the Duke area of Scioto County off State Route 772.

The surname "Dourlet" may be derived from the French-Belgian name "Douillette" or "Douillet." The name may also be found as Dowilet and Doulet.

In his 1940 journal, titled "The Year 1940," Lawrence makes reference to the crops and livestock he raised, to going on dates with his "girl," Ruth, daily temperature fluctuations and the weather.

The journal begins with these entries:

"Jan 1 Mon. Done chores and sit around most of day. Too cold to do much. Snow and cold still continues. 4-22 [degrees]. Partly cloudy."

"Tues. 2 - Sorted a few potatoes and sit around fire besides the chores. Cold but clear and sunny. 2-20 [degrees]."

"Wed. [Jan.] 3 - Still and cold. Spent most of the morning talking at Billy's. Went to Peebles to look at a horse about 1500 lbs. 10 yrs. old, in foal at $140. Clear and cold. 2-26 [degrees]"

"Fri. [Jan.]5 - Took picture of Pa and his colt."
