Mabel Austin (Cole) Stewart Barber was born in Franklin Township, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Martha (Noe) Cole. On 28 October 1908 she married Sherman L. D. Stewart in Centerville, Iowa and together they had five children: Richard Franklin, Beulah Edith, Leonard Henry and a daughter that died on 8 March 1914, the day she was born. In 1919 Sherman died of scarlet fever at the age of 32 and four months later Mabel gave birth to their fifth child, Sherman Edward. On 2 June 1929 in Centerville, Iowa, Mabel married Pearl Barber and together they had two children: Paul Richard and Dorothy Ann. Pearl died on 26 October 1936 at the age of 50 and when Mabel died on 11 March 1981 she was buried beside him at the Numa Cemetery in Numa, Iowa.

Mabel Barber

Mabel A. Barber, 88, of 501 W. 3rd St., Davenport, was pronounced dead on arrival Wednesday morning at St. Luke's Hospital.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Weerts/Hill & Fredericks Funeral Home, Davenport. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Numa, Iowa Cemetery.

Visitation is 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Mrs. Barber ws employed for over 20 years at Oscar Mayer Co., Davenport, until her retirement.

Mabel Cole married Sherman Stewart in 1908. He preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Edith Harrison, Davenport; sons, Leonard Stewart and Paul Barber, both of Bettendorf; and Richard Stewart, Newton, Iowa; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a half-sister, Daisy Schmedeke, Newton.
